Brave the cold North Cornwall sea this festive season, then come home to a hot shower, warm interiors and a very large cup of tea at TREALLEN ROCK.

There are few better ways to blow away the Christmas cobwebs than a dip in the Atlantic. Around Rock and the Camel Estuary, the festive swim is as much a tradition as the turkey: woolly hats, Santa costumes, a flask of something warm and a lot of laughing at the water's edge.

This guide covers where the festive swims happen along the North Cornwall coast, from Polzeath, just 8 minutes from TREALLEN ROCK, to Harlyn Bay, Watergate Bay and Newquay. It also covers what to bring, how to stay safe, and where to warm up afterwards.

Christmas Day

Polzeath Beach, North Cornwall

The closest festive swim to TREALLEN ROCK and one of the biggest on the north coast. Swimmers gather from around 11am for an informal, unorganised dip, so there is no charity or official start, just a crowd of cheerful locals and visitors. Hot chocolate is available from the Oystercatcher afterwards, and a flask of something warm is never a bad idea.

Watergate Bay, near Newquay

Another informal Christmas Day dip, with swimmers meeting at the front of the Extreme Academy Surf School. It is dog-friendly, and the Beach Hut serves hot chocolate. Take extra care and only go in if conditions are good.

Crooklets Beach, Bude

A longer drive from Rock, but worth knowing about. Bude Surf Life Saving Club hosts a starter's-whistle Christmas Day swim at 11am, with around 500 swimmers, Santa hats and dogs in the mix. All proceeds go to the club.

Boxing Day

Perranporth

Registration opens from 10:30am for the Perranporth Surf Life Saving Club swim. Check the tide before you go, as low water can mean a run across the sand to reach the sea. Mulled wine is served nearby, and non-swimmers can walk the coast path towards Holywell Bay.

New Year's Day

Harlyn Bay, near Padstow

A popular spot for a first dip of the year, with swimmers gathering around midday. Bring a flask of hot coffee and, if you can, a dog. Afterwards, walk the headland towards Trevose and look out for seals.

Newquay Harbour

Around midday, this is a popular fancy-dress charity swim in aid of Young Lives vs Cancer. It gets very busy, so arrive early.

Prefer a quieter dip?

Not everyone wants a crowd. For a calmer, more private start to the day, the beaches closest to TREALLEN ROCK are Rock beach and Porthilly beach, with Daymer Bay a 3-minute drive away. Neither hosts an organised swim, so go with friends, keep to the shallows and check the tide first.

What to bring and how to stay safe

  • Pack for the cold: a woolly hat, wetsuit boots or neoprene socks, a dry robe or big towel, and a hot water bottle waiting in the car.

  • Skip the wetsuit: festive swims are traditionally wetsuit-free, but keep it short.

  • Never swim alone: lifeguard cover is usually only provided at organised events, and informal swims may have none.

  • Respect cold water shock: get in slowly, keep your breathing calm and get out before you feel numb.

  • Check the tide and conditions: if the sea looks rough, stay on the beach and cheer from the shore.

  • Know your limits: a quick dip is the aim, not a long swim.

  • Check before you go: unofficial swims can change or be cancelled at short notice, so check local social media or swim groups for this year's times.

Warming up afterwards

The best part of a festive swim is what comes next. A quick drive back to TREALLEN ROCK means a hot shower, warm interiors and a proper breakfast around the table with the whole group.
