Beaches Worth the Drive: Beyond Rock

You could spend a whole week at TREALLEN ROCK without leaving Rock, Daymer Bay and Polzeath — and many guests do. But if you've got a car and fancy exploring a little further, North Cornwall has a run of beaches well worth the drive. Here are our favourites.

Trebarwith Strand

About 25 minutes from Rock, Trebarwith Strand is dramatic and wild — a large sandy beach backed by cliffs, caves and rock ledges, with a mile-long stretch of sand revealed at low tide. It's a popular sunset spot in summer and an atmospheric one for storm-watching in winter. The tide comes in quickly here, so it's worth checking times before you settle in, as it's possible to get cut off. A short coastal walk leads on to the historic village of Tintagel.

The Seven Bays

A run of sandy beaches between Padstow and Newquay, roughly 30 minutes from Rock — genuinely worth making a full day of if you're going that far. Each has its own character:

• Trevone Bay — a Blue Flag beach with a natural sea pool, closest to Padstow

• Harlyn Bay — a good spot for paddleboarding

• Constantine Bay — large, popular for surfing, and a lovely spot for a sunset

• Treyarnon Bay — sheltered and backed by dunes, with a tidal rock pool

• Porthcothan Bay — popular for swimming and snorkelling, closest to Newquay

• Booby's Bay & Mother Ivey's Bay — quieter spots, good for rockpooling, wildlife-watching and sandcastles
