St Michael's, Porthilly is the small church on the edge of the Camel Estuary, and our guests who attend weddings there ask us about it more than almost anything else. We are EVLA Stay, the hosts of TREALLEN ROCK, a luxury holiday home in Rock that sleeps six, and this is what we tell wedding guests about the church and the stay around it.

In this guide: the church and its setting, planning a ceremony, where to stay, and where to eat before and after.

The Church and its Setting

St Michael's stands on the east side of Porthilly Cove, looking over the Camel Estuary towards Padstow. It is a Grade II* listed church, with an early 12th-century front, and it has its own sea wall and steps down to the beach. The church belongs to the parish of St Minver.

Inside, it is low, quiet and full of old things. Look for the carved 12th-century font, the early 16th-century pulpit with panelling. The roofs date from the 15th century. The church had fallen into decay by 1865, and a restoration in 1865 to 1867 rebuilt the south porch and tower.

It is typically open in daylight hours, and services are regularly held every Sunday. If the door is locked, the key is kept at Porthilly Farm. There are two steps down on entering, so check access with the church if anyone in your party needs step-free entry.

Planning a Ceremony at St Michael's

The church seats up to 90 people, so it suits an intimate wedding. A local florist often arranges the wedding flowers. For dates, fees and the legal side of marrying in a Church of England church, start with the North Cornwall Cluster of Churches, who look after the church.

A few things we pass on to guests:

  • Parking: park at Porthilly Farm, follow the signs and take the short footpath to the church. Allow extra time in your wedding-day timings.

  • Shoes: the lane and footpath are uneven. Flat or block heels will be kinder than stilettos.

  • Tides: the church sits right by the estuary, so check the tide times for photographs on the beach below the sea wall.

  • Timing: Cornish weddings run to the tide and the weather. Build in half an hour more than you think you need. St Michaels Church is approximately 20 minute walk from our luxury holiday home, TREALLEN ROCK.If you drive, allow for 3 minutes.

Before and After The Ceremony

Rock is a small village, so a wedding stay here is easy to plan around.

  • Where to eat in Rock: The Mariners for a proper welcome, The Upper Deck for a view over the estuary, and Estuary Grill St Enodoc Hotel when you want something relaxed and local. Book ahead on wedding stays, because the village fills up.

  • A day in Padstow: a short hop on the ferry from Rock, good for lunch before the big day. Prawn on the Lawn is a favourite for seafood and small plates.

  • Reception venues nearby: many couples marrying at St Michael's celebrate at venues around Rock, Polzeath and the Camel Estuary. Our guide to wedding venues near Rock, Cornwall covers St Enodoc Hotel, Dinham House, Trewornan Manor, Pengenna Manor and Porthilly Farm.

  • Wedding guests booking separately: see our page on wedding guest accommodation near Rock.

If you are travelling as a group, book transport home early. Taxis in a village this size are in demand after an evening reception.
