A Romantic Break in Rock, Cornwall: Honeymoon and Minimoon Ideas

A honeymoon doesn't have to mean a long-haul flight. Cornwall's north coast has dramatic cliffs, quiet coves, long beaches and some of the best restaurants in the country, and Rock puts all of it within easy reach. A minimoon, the short break many couples take straight after the wedding while the big trip waits, works especially well here.
We look after TREALLEN ROCK, a luxury holiday house in Rock, Cornwall, UK that sleeps six, and we see plenty of couples and wedding parties arrive for and after a wedding in the area. This guide is built around what we would do ourselves: slow mornings, walks along the estuary, a ferry across to Padstow for dinner, and an evening back by the water.
A note on the details: ferry times, opening hours and restaurant availability change with the season and the tide, so check before you go and book tables early. Distances are from TREALLEN ROCK.
Why Rock works for a honeymoon or minimoon
It's easy to reach. Newquay Airport is about 30 minutes away, and Bodmin Parkway has direct trains from London Paddington. See our Getting to Rock guide.
It's right on the water. Rock Beach looks across the Camel Estuary to Padstow, and the ferry runs from the village.
Padstow is on your doorstep. A short ferry ride gets you to some of Cornwall's best-known restaurants.
It's close to the wedding venues. If you're marrying nearby, you can step straight into your minimoon. See our guides to wedding venues in North Cornwall and wedding venues near Rock.
Ideas for a romantic few days
Dinner in Padstow
Take the passenger ferry across the Camel Estuary, a crossing of 5 to 10 minutes that drops you into the harbour, and spend the evening in one of Cornwall's best-known food towns. Rick Stein's Seafood Restaurant and Paul Ainsworth at No. 6 are the two big names, and both are worth booking well ahead for a special occasion. Our Foodie's Guide to Padstow and Ultimate Guide to Padstow cover the rest. Check the last ferry back to Rock before you sit down.
A sunset walk on Rock Beach
Rock Beach is the nearest beach to TREALLEN ROCK, a wide stretch of sand backed by dunes and looking across the estuary to Padstow. It's best at the end of the day, with the boats going home. Check tide times first, as the sand shrinks quickly at high water.
Walk to Polzeath via St Enodoc
The coast walk from Rock to Polzeath is around 2.5 to 3 miles each way, passing the dunes, Bray Hill and the medieval church of St Enodoc, the resting place of the poet Sir John Betjeman. Stop for lunch at Polzeath, then walk back or arrange a taxi. Full route in our Rock to Polzeath walk guide.
A picnic at a quiet cove
Porthilly Cove is a small, quiet cove just along the shore from Rock, with a view across the estuary to Padstow. Greenaway Beach, near Trebetherick, is quieter still, but you reach it down a steep flight of steps and it's best at low tide. Bring what you need to either. For more beaches, see our best beaches near Rock guide.
Cycle the Camel Trail
The Camel Trail is a flat, traffic-free path running from Padstow towards Wadebridge and beyond. Bikes can be hired by the harbour, and even a short out-and-back makes a lovely couple of hours.
A vineyard afternoon
Trevibban Mill is just outside Padstow, about 27 minutes' drive from TREALLEN ROCK, and Camel Valley is 26 minutes away. Book tours ahead and plan who is driving. See our guide to Cornwall's vineyards and wineries.
An evening in the hot tub (July and August)
In July and August, TREALLEN ROCK has a seasonal hot tub, a lovely way to end a day on the coast, with the evening gone quiet and the stars out over a low-light-pollution stretch of North Cornwall. Outside those months the games room takes over. Read more about the hot tub at TREALLEN ROCK.
A slow morning at home
Some of the best parts of a honeymoon are the ones you don't plan. Enjoy a slow breakfast on the patio overlooking the landscaped garden and Cornish countryside. Every stay also includes a welcome hamper, 100% Cornish-sourced. See everything included at TREALLEN ROCK.
Planning tips
Book restaurants first. The best tables in Padstow and Rock fill early, especially in summer and on weekends.
Consider midweek or off-season. Roads, beaches and restaurants are quieter outside school holidays, and the coast is dramatic in any weather.
Check the ferry and tides. The Rock to Padstow ferry runs throughout the year and by the tide, so check times on arrival and again before the evening back.
Allow a slow first day. After a wedding, the best plan is often no plan.
Think about travel. If you're arriving by train or air, arrange a taxi or transfer for the last leg. See Getting to Rock.
