Cornwall's mild climate and sheltered valleys now support some of the best-known vineyards in England, and several sit within an easy drive of Rock and Padstow. This guide covers six vineyards and wineries across Cornwall, from a short hop from Padstow to a longer day out towards Penzance, with notes on tours, tastings and food.

We look after TREALLEN ROCK, a luxury holiday house in Rock, Cornwall, UK that sleeps six, so we hear a lot from guests about where to go for a tasting. We've written this as a starting point for planning a day or an afternoon, with the vineyards closest to Rock first.

A note on the details: opening times, tour days, prices and booking rules change with the season, and some vineyards close in winter. Please check the vineyard's own website before you set off, and book tours in advance where they ask for it. Drive times are from TREALLEN ROCK.

The vineyards

Trevibban Mill, near Padstow

  • Location: Dark Lane, just outside Padstow.

  • From TREALLEN ROCK: 27 minutes drive time.

  • Good to know: Guided tours and tastings usually need booking ahead.

Trevibban Mill is the closest vineyard to Rock and the easiest to fit into a Padstow day. Tutored tours and tastings cover both wine and cider, and there is a terrace for a glass and a snack board afterwards. Much of what it makes is organic.

Camel Valley, near Bodmin

  • Location: Nanstallon, close to the Camel Trail between Wadebridge and Bodmin.

  • From TREALLEN ROCK: 26 minutes drive time.

  • Good to know: book tours in advance.

Camel Valley is one of Cornwall's best-known names, with a reputation for English sparkling wine. Guided tours run on weekdays in the season and end with a tasting of the main wines, and the shop is open for buying bottles. It pairs well with a day on the Camel Trail.

The Atlantic Vineyard, near Newquay

  • Location: on the outskirts of Newquay.

  • From TREALLEN ROCK: 40 minutes drive time.

  • Good to know: visits are by appointment, with occasional summer open days.

An off-grid, organic vineyard that offers guided tours and tastings. It also hosts weddings, events and retreats, and has offered glamping among the vines in summer, so check what is on before you plan a visit.

Knightor Winery, near St Austell

  • Location: Trethurgy, near St Austell, with a summer venue at Portscatho on the Roseland Peninsula.

  • From TREALLEN ROCK: 40 minutes drive time.

  • Good to know: Booking is usually needed only for larger groups and private tastings.

Knightor is known for wines and vermouth, and offers tastings at its Cellar Door and a cocktail experience. A good stop on a day out towards Eden or the south coast.

Polgoon Vineyard, near Penzance

  • Location: Rosehill, by the A30 on the edge of Penzance.

  • From TREALLEN ROCK: 75 minutes drive time. Best treated as part of a longer trip west.

  • Good to know: Pre-book tours and restaurant tables.

Polgoon makes wine and cider and has a shop, a restaurant, markets and events. Visitors can walk the vines on their own or take a guided tour with a tasting.

Looe Valley Vineyard, near Looe

  • Location: St Keyne, near Looe in south-east Cornwall.

  • From TREALLEN ROCK: 54 minutes drive time. Best as a day trip from Rock if you are already heading east or south.

  • Good to know: open in the summer season. Pre-book tours and tastings.

A smaller family-run vineyard with self-guided tastings and tours, plus a longer hands-on session with the owner for those who want to learn how the wine is made.

Planning your visit

  • Book tours early. Several vineyards run guided tours on set days and ask you to book ahead, especially in summer.

  • Plan who is driving. Tastings and country roads don't mix. Book a taxi, or let the designated driver enjoy the food and the views.

  • Check the season. Some vineyards close or cut back in winter, so confirm opening times first.

  • Combine it with a day out. Trevibban Mill fits neatly with a day in Padstow, and Camel Valley with the Camel Trail. Our Ultimate Guide to Padstow and Getting to Rock guide help with the planning.

  • Pack for the weather. Vineyards are outdoors, so bring a layer.
