The walk from Rock to Polzeath is one of the loveliest short coastal routes on the north Cornwall coast. At around 2.5 to 3 miles each way, it takes in dunes, a historic church, quiet coves and a surf beach at the finish. And if you are staying at TREALLEN ROCK, you can set off straight from your door.

The walk at a glance

  • Distance: around 2.5 to 3 miles each way

  • Start: TREALLEN ROCK, Rock

  • Finish: Polzeath beach, with Trebetherick along the way

  • Highlights: Rock dunes, Bray Hill, St Enodoc Church, Greenaway Beach and Polzeath

The route, stage by stage

Rock to Bray Hill

Leave Rock by way of the sand dunes, or along the beach if the tide is out. Soon you reach Bray Hill, where a short climb rewards you with wide views over the Camel Estuary. If you would rather skip the climb, paths run around the hill.

St Enodoc Church

Tucked among the dunes, St Enodoc is a small medieval church with a remarkable story. It was once almost buried in sand, and it is the resting place of the poet Sir John Betjeman, who loved this stretch of coast. It is well worth a pause.

Daymer Bay and Greenaway Beach

From the church, follow the coast path towards Polzeath. Along the way you will pass Daymer Bay and the quieter Greenaway Beach, a peaceful spot for a picnic or a wander around the rock pools.

Polzeath

Your reward is Polzeath, the area's best-known surf beach, with cafes and places to eat overlooking the sand. Stop for lunch, watch the surfers, then decide whether to head back or carry on. Planning to stay for the evening? See our guide to sunset spots near Rock.

Want to go further? Pentire Point

Energetic walkers can continue up to Pentire Point, a dramatic headland with views back towards Padstow. It is also where the poet Laurence Binyon is said to have written For the Fallen in 1914. Then retrace your steps to Rock. Just below the headland is a quiet sandy cove; see our guide to Baby Bay.

Tips before you set off

  • Check the tide times and weather first, as the route is different at low and high tide

  • Wear sturdy, comfortable shoes and take water and sun protection

  • Decide in advance whether you will walk back or arrange a taxi from Polzeath
