Sunset spots near Rock: where to watch the sun go down

The north Cornwall coast faces the Atlantic, and on a clear evening the sun sets over open water, with the Camel Estuary and the headlands turning gold and pink. Within a few minutes of Rock there are beaches, cliff tops and coast path viewpoints that make good places to end the day.
We look after TREALLEN ROCK, a luxury holiday house in Rock, Cornwall, UK that sleeps six, and these are the sunset spots we suggest to guests, from a stroll on the beach to a longer walk with a picnic.
A note on the details: sunset times, tides and access change through the year, so please check sunset and tide times before you set off, and take a torch if you plan to walk back in the dark.
Where to watch the sunset
Rock Beach
The nearest spot of all. Rock Beach looks across the estuary towards Padstow, so you can watch the light change over the water without going far.
Best for: an easy evening, estuary views and a walk back to the house.
Polzeath
Polzeath is 8 minutes' drive from TREALLEN ROCK and a good beach for a late summer sunset. Bring a picnic, or eat on the beachfront. For places to eat, see our guide to eating out in Polzeath.
Best for: a beach evening with food nearby.
Daymer Bay
A sheltered bay by the estuary mouth, with dunes behind it and a short walk to St Enodoc Church. Our Daymer Bay guide has more.
Best for: a relaxed family evening and a stroll along the sand.
Greenaway Beach
A small, quiet cove between Daymer Bay and Polzeath, with rock pools and views towards Stepper Point. It is easy to walk to from either.
Best for: peace and quiet and rock pooling before the light goes.
Baby Bay
The small sandy cove just around the headland from Polzeath. It faces west, which makes it a good place to end the day. Read our Baby Bay guide, and check the tide first.
Best for: a quieter evening than Polzeath.
The Rumps and Pentire Point
The Rumps is a headland with an Iron Age cliff castle, and Pentire Point has wide views over Padstow Bay. You can start from the Pentire Farm car park for a shorter walk, or from Polzeath. Take a picnic and sturdy shoes, as the paths are narrow and stony in places and the headland can be windy.
Best for: big ocean views and a picnic with a drink.
Stepper Point
A headland at the mouth of the Camel Estuary, with views across the Doom Bar and the Daymark, a stone tower built as a navigation aid for sailors. You can walk to it along the coast path from Padstow. Read the story of the Doom Bar.
Best for: estuary and sea views, and a longer walk.
Tips for watching the sunset
Check the times: sunset moves a long way through the year, so look up the time for the day you go and arrive about 30 minutes early.
Check the tide: some beaches and coves change a lot between high and low water, so look at the tide times before you set off.
Pack for the evening: it cools quickly once the sun goes. Bring a jumper, and a torch for the walk back.
Wear sturdy shoes: coast path and headland routes can be uneven, narrow and windy.
Take your rubbish home: please leave the beach and headlands as you found them.
