Afternoon tea with schones, cream and jam

A proper Cornish afternoon tea — scones, jam, clotted cream, done the right way round — is one of those small rituals worth building into a stay. Here's where we'd go, from a five-minute drive to a stop along the coast path.

St Moritz Hotel, Trebetherick

A short drive away, St Moritz does a proper sit-down afternoon tea — tea or coffee with a glass of Prosecco included, with Champagne as an option if you're celebrating something. Worth booking ahead, particularly in peak season.

St Enodoc Hotel

Closer still — St Enodoc also serves afternoon tea, in a genuinely lovely setting overlooking the golf course and estuary. A good option if you're already spending the day nearby.

Across the Water in Padstow

Take the passenger ferry across and there's more choice again:

  • Prideaux Place — afternoon tea in the grounds of a genuine Elizabethan manor house, overlooking the deer park. A proper setting for something special.

  • Cherry Trees Coffee House — small, right in the middle of the harbour, and a properly good cream tea without the fuss.

  • Rest a While Tea Garden — a tiny tea garden at Hawker's Cove, about a 45-minute walk along the coast path from Padstow. A perfect stop if you're already out walking towards Stepper Point.
