Windsurfing and Kitesurfing in North Cornwall: Where to Go from Rock
Updated: 1 day ago
North Cornwall suits anyone who loves wind and water. The coast faces the Atlantic, the breeze rarely gives up, and within a short distance you can choose between sheltered estuary water and open-coast conditions. From TREALLEN ROCK, the best of it is on your doorstep.

Daymer Bay
Daymer Bay sits in a sheltered bay inside the Camel Estuary, a short distance from Rock, and is the natural starting point. At low tide long stretches of golden sand are exposed, backed by dunes that run round towards Rock. Kitesurfers and windsurfers use the bay, and on a breezy day the sky fills with colourful kites. Even if you would rather stay dry, it is a lovely place to watch from the beach, with Brea Hill at the far end for the view and St Enodoc Church tucked in the dunes. For walking routes and facilities, see our Daymer Bay guide, and you can read more about the beach on the Visit Cornwall website.
Polzeath
Just round the headland, Polzeath faces the open Atlantic and is better known for surfing. It makes a lively contrast to the estuary, and it is a good place for a coffee and a walk along the sand. You can even walk there from the house: see our Rock to Polzeath coastal walk.
Rock and the estuary
Rock has its own sailing and watersports life, from lessons to waterskiing, and the Padstow ferry crosses the estuary from here, so a day on the water can end with dinner on the other side. Our guide to sailing and watersports at Rock has the local options.
Before you go
Wind and tide decide everything on the estuary. The shape of the water changes a great deal between high and low tide, and currents can be strong. Check the tide times and the wind forecast before you go, follow local rules and advice, and take a lesson with a qualified school if you are new to either sport.
Where to stay
TREALLEN ROCK sleeps six in three double bedrooms, with a west-facing garden, a games room and a seasonal hot tub, so there is room to dry your kit and warm up afterwards. Book your stay direct or get in touch to check availability for your dates.
