Rock is popular in high summer, but a few minutes in the right direction and it quietens right down. Here are the places we go for peace and a good view: quiet corners of the estuary shore, dune paths, a hilltop with views over the whole bay, and a small cove that most visitors walk straight past. If you're planning a stay, check availability and book direct.

Quiet corners of Rock Beach and the dunes

Walk away from the main access and Rock Beach thins out quickly. The dunes behind it are a quieter way to reach Daymer Bay on foot, with the estuary on one side and long grass on the other. Take the footpath from the Rock Quarry car park.

Best time: early morning or the last hour before sunset.

Porthilly Cove

A small, tucked-away cove along the shore from Rock, with views across the estuary to Padstow. Quiet enough for a picnic or a slow walk at the water's edge. There is not much here beyond the view, so bring what you need.

St Enodoc Church

A small medieval church in the dunes near Trebetherick, reached on foot from Daymer Bay or Rock. It has a quiet, sheltered feel and views over the estuary. Part of our coastal walks guide.

Brea Hill

A hilltop viewpoint above Daymer Bay with views over the estuary, Padstow and the coast beyond. A short, steady climb rewarded by one of the best views in the area.

Greenaway Beach

A tiny cove in Trebetherick, easy to miss because Daymer Bay and Rock Beach take most of the attention. You reach it down a steep flight of steps, best at low tide, with coarse sand, rock pools and rocky cliffs. There is no lifeguard and no facilities.

Hawkers Cove

A quiet corner on the Padstow side of the estuary, reached on foot along the coast, with views back across the water. We filmed our windsurfing and kitesurfing guide from here. Rest a While Tea Garden, a tiny tea garden at Hawkers Cove, is a lovely place to stop for a cup of tea on the walk (check before you set off, as it is small and may be seasonal). See our guide to afternoon tea near Rock for more.

Best times of day for peace and views

  • Early morning: the estuary shore and dunes are at their quietest.

  • Late afternoon and evening: the light over the estuary is at its best, and the day visitors have gone home.

  • Outside July and August: most of these spots are far quieter in spring and autumn.

Tide times matter on every beach here, so check before you set out.

Stay in Rock

TREALLEN ROCK is in Rock, so the estuary shore and the dunes are close by. It sleeps six, with a west-facing garden and a games room. Check availability and book direct, or email info@evlastay.com. For more ideas, see our beaches guide, our coastal walks guide and our Daymer Bay guide. Looking out across the estuary, you are looking at the Doom Bar: see our guide to its legend and history.
